Hello sunshine!

Most people eat fast. Are you also like this or do you prefer chewing each bite well?

When I was younger my father used to call my attention to the way I ate: too fast for his (macrobiotic) standards. I must admit that his remarks were a bit annoying. I liked eating fast or should I say, it was boring to eat slowly. However, after hearing his comments so many times I eventually changed this habit. In fact, I came to the conclusion that our health and well-being is not only related to what we eat, but also how we eat.

So, what are the benefits of eating slowly?

  • It aids digestion
  • It helps you to eat less
  • You enjoy food more as you become aware of the different flavors and textures

And what are the downsides?

  • You will probably be the last one finishing the meal
  • If you start talking then you will be for sure the last one finishing the meal, so you might experience some pressure from the “dessert community”

Well, as you see I think the downsides are pretty manageable.

If you would like to start eating slower to see how you feel, then  I have some tips for you:

  1. Make sure you are seated during each meal
  2. Avoid arguments while eating
  3. Chew each bite at least 30 times
  4. Put your cutlery down in between bites
  5. Use chopsticks (it will also be fun!)
  6. Be mindful as I explain in my book Back to Natural
  7. Enjoy!
