Hello sunshine!
“I´m vegan.”
“I´m paleo.”
“I´m raw.”
One of the biggest problems with “labels” is when they become a prison. The world of diets is a great example of this. When we label ourselves (and are labeled) as “vegan” or “paleo”, for example, we end up limiting ourselves. In the beginning, however, it might seem otherwise. In fact, we can even feel more confident, more “us.” We end up mistaking our identity with our food choices. And then? Well, we start hanging out only with a certain kind of people: the ones who follow our diet. This is what unites us: the diet. What if something changes in the meantime?
Our body doesn´t work simply according to our will. No matter how hard we want to be vegan or paleo or raw or…this doesn´t mean that our organism wants the same. There are cases, including public, of people becoming sick because of their diets. They didn´t change anything just to meet expectations and to avoid having someone pointing the finger.
Contrary to what is commonly believed our food needs might change over time due to several reasons. When we tune in to our body (meaning inside out and not outside in) it´s when we become aware of this. In fact, we are the ones who know best what´s right for us to eat. We just need to pay attention to our body´s messages and, of course, be well-informed. It´s never enough to remember that we consume:
- Too much animal protein
- Too little fruit and vegetables
This type of choices have a profound impact not only health wise like it was shown by The China Study, the biggest epidemiological study about the impact of food and lifestyle on health, but also environment wise. Did you know that livestock is responsible for more greenhouse emissions than the entire transport sector?
It is, thus, urgent to listen to our bodies or we are at risk of becoming hostages to our own diets.
Nurture yourself,
Natacha
