Kefir is a fermented milk drink and it has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. This is because of my father. He is the number one kefir drinker that I know, with more than 30 years experience consuming this fantastic food.
Kefir´s benefits are many, but I would name four according to my experience:
- It is antifungal
- It aids digestion
- It supports gut health
- It strengthens the immune system
I must admit that I just started drinking kefir later on in my life. The gelatinous-kind-of-cauliflower plant, which ferments the milk, and the sour taste were a bit dissuasive. After having overcome these factors, it became interesting to notice that the more I drank it, the more I wanted to drink it. However, as I was not realizing how beneficial kefir was for me, I left it behind when I moved abroad.
Many years passed by and it was only when I came to the Azores that I started drinking kefir again. As first impressions go, I felt my digestion and bowel movements had improved. But while doing my research on women´s health I came to the conclusion that it would be best to stop consuming dairy or at least reduce it considerably, as I have explained in my book Back to Natural. The only option I had, since kefir was made with cow´s milk, was to say goodbye to it. At least that was what I thought, so I spent around six months without drinking it.
I was eating well, doing exercise and practicing meditation, but I was not feeling 100 percent and I just couldn´t figure out why. I then got a nasty surprise: a toenail fungus for the first time in my life! I simply didn´t believe what I was seeing! The problem was that the fungus spread to two more nails. I was getting desperate…
First I looked for more natural solutions, so I decided to put vinegar and then hydrogen peroxide on the affected area, but they simply didn´t work for me. As my next step I bought an anti-fungal pen in the pharmacy and, unfortunately, I was also not lucky,
Finally I went to a dermatologist. I told him I didn´t like to take medication and that I was always looking for natural alternatives…Well, basically his answer was: you have to take an antibiotic. I got so sad and frustrated when he told me that because it had been years since I took an antibiotic. Either way I decided to buy it, unwillingly.
Luckily one of my aunts also drinks kefir (given by my father, by the way), but made with vegetable milk. While talking to her I realized that probably the reason behind my toenail fungus was having stopped drinking kefir. So I went to my fridge, got the kefir plant back (I had put it in a jar with water) and made kefir this time with almond milk. And do you know what? After a couple of weeks two of the three toenail fungus had simply disappeared. There was only one which needed an extra natural help that I will share with you in my next post. And what about the antibiotic? The boxes (yes, boxes!) were never opened.
After my experience, Hugo as well as my mother started drinking kefir and they are happy with their choice. Kefir, in a way, has become my family´s drink.
