Hello sunshine!

I´ve been away from this blog during the last few weeks to prepare the Autumn Retreat – detox, mindfulness, yoga, nature on the Island of Faial between the 4h and 7th of October. These days were all about self-knowledge, a lot of sharing and love.

The retreat included, for example:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Detox food
  • Sessions about women empowerment
  • Nature walk

Autumn is the season of the Metal element*, according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and our focus was on the support of the two organs associated with this element: the lungs and large intestine. It was all about nurturing these two organs at a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

But maybe you are wondering: how are lungs and large intestine related? For TCM these two organs complement each other energetically**:  to give space for the new, like the lungs that receive oxygen, we need to get rid of the old, like the large intestine that remove waste.

According to TCM breathing problems such as colds and flu, asthma and bronchitis, and intestinal such as diarrhea, constipation and colitis indicate an imbalance in this element. But emotional fragility, melancholie and depression also indicate a disharmony in this element. This is because maximum sadness is felt in the lungs. So how can we feel better? Here are 3 tips:

1. Food: the food that nurture the element Metal the most is, for example, sweet potato, potato, yam, pumpkin/squash, carrots, turnip, arugula, mustard leaves, ginger, adzuki beans, not to forget spices such as cumin, mustard seeds and fennel seeds and, if you like spicy food, chillis as well

2. Breathing: let´s nurture our lungs breathing with intention. You can find some examples here and here

3. Acknowledge your pain: sadness is also part of our lives. But if we ignore what we feel, then this pain might become pathologic, according to TCM. So take advantage of this season to acknowledge your pain, your sadness and don´t judge yourself about it. If you can, share it with someone. It´s time for you to look ahead, to free yourself from the past and give space to the future

The Autumn Retreat – detox, mindfulness, yoga, nature, organized by Janete Chaves of Azorean Guarani in partnership with me went so well that we are already planning the ones to follow! So don´t worry if you couldn´t attend this retreat because there will be other opportunities! 🙂

*One of the basic pillars of TCM is the 5 Element theory in which everything is seen existing in the cycle of nature. So when the elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) are in balance we are in a state of harmony and we are healthy, but when there is an imbalance disease develops.

**In TCM there are 12 meridians which are energetic channels that transport the chi (vital energy) throughout the body. They are present in both sides of the body and each pair is related to a specific organ.
